Collecting companion pets is a highly popular activity in World of Warcraft. For some players, these small creatures are just cute visual accessories that follow them around major cities. For others, they are valuable tools for turn-based companion combat or high-value items that can be sold on the auction house for hundreds of thousands of gold.
Over more than twenty years of active play, I have collected hundreds of companion pets. This page lists my absolute rarest pets, the stories of how I obtained them, and practical tips on how you can add them to your own collection.
1. Murky (The Blue Murloc)
This tiny blue murloc is one of the most famous and rarest pets in the entire history of the game. When summoned, it dances, waves its spear, and lets out a classic murloc gurgle.
- How I Obtained It: I earned this pet by attending the very first BlizzCon event in October 2005.
- The Story: The ticket to the convention came with a physical card containing a scratch-off code. I redeemed the code in-game at a special NPC in Booty Bay. Today, because this card is no longer produced, Murky is almost impossible to find and represents a true piece of the game’s early history.
- My Collection Tip: Because this pet is bound to the account that redeemed the original code, you cannot buy it on the auction house. It is a true legacy item that shows you have been a part of the community since the very beginning.
2. Spectral Tiger Cub
This beautiful, translucent blue tiger cub is a highly desired cosmetic companion. It matches the visual style of the famous Spectral Tiger mount and is a massive status symbol.
- How I Obtained It: This pet originally came from the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion pack called “Fires of Outland.”
- The Story: I spent years saving up gold on my main server to purchase this pet from another player. I eventually found someone willing to trade the pet for a large sum of gold on the auction house during the Mists of Pandaria expansion.
- My Collection Tip: Unlike Murky, the Spectral Tiger Cub is tradeable. You can find it on the auction house, but the price is usually extremely high. If you want to buy one, keep a steady eye on the market and have your gold supplies ready.

3. Minion of Grumpus
This strange, frozen undead companion is a seasonal reward that is only available during the annual Feast of Winter Veil holiday event.
- How I Obtained It: I earned this pet by opening a “Savage Gift” purchased with Merry Supplies during the winter event.
- The Story: I spent two weeks completing daily holiday quests on ten different characters to maximize my chances of getting the gift. On the final day of the event, the pet finally dropped from my last daily package.
- My Collection Tip: If you do not want to wait for the holiday event, you can often find this pet on the auction house during the summer months when prices are lower. Players who hoarded the pets during winter will often sell them cheap when they need quick gold.
4. Hyacinth Macaw
This beautiful, bright blue parrot was once famous for having the lowest drop rate of any world-drop pet in the original version of the game.
- How I Obtained It: It drops from the Bloodsail Pirates that patrol the southern coasts of Stranglethorn Vale.
- The Story: During the classic era, I spent three weeks farming the pirate camps on the coast of Booty Bay. I killed thousands of pirates and collected bags of silk cloth before the rare blue feathers finally appeared on a defeated enemy.
- My Collection Tip: You can still farm this pet today in the Cape of Stranglethorn. It is a great activity to do while watching a video or listening to a podcast, as the enemies are very easy to defeat at maximum level.
